Motivational speaker

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOT : Motivational speaker

Motivational speakers are persons engaged in public speaking who help motivate others with their knowledge and real-life stories in public setting such as sales seminars and corporate meetings.

Many are well-known figures such as retired athletes and movie and TV actors, while others are persons who have received little public attention early in their lives but have been raised by events to the status of war hero or other heroic figure such as a firefighter involved in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks or the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Experts debate the long-term value of motivation. It is fairly agreed, however, that a motivational speaker can have an immediate impact on a person's morale or sense of self-worth. The best motivational speakers remind people of their own potential and inspire them to improve their personal and professional well-being. The big question one must ask when deciding on which motivational speaker to work is their ability to fuse these heightened feelings with practical strategies for change or improvement.[link]

Often, "inspirational" material is included in such presentations, usually of somewhat generic "spirituality" but occasionally an overtly born-again Christian message. Unless, the speech is being given within a religious context, these can be the least effective presentations and one-dimensional. Evangelizing is also prohibited in the workplace as it infringes on civil liberties. Also, It's incorrect to assume that the audience uniformly shares a singular religious mindset. Any presentation biased towards one set of religious or cultural values runs the risk of problems with maintaining non-hostile environments.

The best-known parody of this occupation in North America in recent years was that performed as recurring sketch comedy character Matt Foley on Saturday Night Live by the late Chris Farley.
