Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOU : Moulamein, New South Wales

Moulamein ([35°05′S 144°02′E]) is a small town in New South Wales, Australia in Wakool Shire, with a population of 423 in 2001. Moulamein is one of the oldest towns in the Riverina. This area includes a large number of country towns, including Deniliquin, Wagga Wagga, Hay and Finley.

Moulamein is an Aboriginal word meaning "river junction" or "between the rivers". Moulamein is between the Edward River and Billabong Creek. The Edward River drains into the Wakool River, which then drains into the Murray River.

The climate of this area is semi arid, and the area is rich in birdlife such as waterfowl, wedge-tailed Eagles and emus. This area also has quite a lot of kangaroos.

This town was surveyed by Thomas Townsend, in the year 1851. The police records began in 1845. Moulamein had a court house before Albury, so prisoners were brought there to be tried.
