Mount Clay

Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOU : Mount Clay

In 2003, New Hampshire changed the mountain's name to Mount Reagan. However, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names still recognizes the name Mount Clay. See #Mount Reagan name change.

Mount Clay is located in Coos County in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It has an elevation of 5,533 feet and is a northerly shoulder of Mount Washington, which is one mile away. The Jewell Trail from the cog rail base station makes the route via Mount Clay one of the "easiest ways to climb Mount Washington from the west," at least during fair weather.

Mount Reagan name change

On June 17, 2003, the New Hampshire General Court passed [House Bill 82] "officially renaming Mt. Clay to Mount Reagan". The legal force of this legislation is limited to official New Hampshire state usage, as the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) still lists the name as Mt. Clay, per BGN policy of not considering commemorative names for geographic features until the commememorated person has been dead for five years. Maps used in connection with foot travel in the Presidentials are typically published by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC).
