Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOU : Mount Grace State Forest

Mount Grace State Forest is a Massachusetts state forest located in Warwick. The forest is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Description

Mount Grace State Forest is a 1,458 acre forest highlighted by the 1,625 foot Mount Grace, the second highest point in the Commonwealth east of the Connecticut River. The forest is popular for hiking and horseback riding.

The forest borders Warwick State Forest to the west.

History

Mount Grace is connected with a famous episode from the era of Colonial skirmishes against the Wampanoag Indians, known as King Philip's War. In 1676, Mary Rowlandson of Lancaster (a town 40 miles to the east) was captured, along with her infant daughter Grace, by a band of King Philip's warriors. On a march toward Canada the baby died, and it is said to have been buried by her mother's hands at the foot of the mountain that now bears her name.
