Mount Vernon College for Women

Mount Vernon College for Women was an all-women institute for higher learning located in the Georgetown district of Washington, D.C.
The college began in 1875 as a high school and junior college. Elizabeth Somers had been teaching young women at her home since 1868. The school was origianlly named Mount Vernon Seminary.
The high school was closed in the mid-1970s, and the college expanded to a baccalaureate institution. This change occurred when there was a rapid decline in the number of women's colleges in the United States.
The college was acquired by The George Washington University in 1999, and their 26-acre campus became The George Washington University at Mount Vernon College. After being purchsed by GW, only female GW students lived on the campus, but now male and female students live on the campus. GW also constructed new athletic fields and other facilities.
