Encyclopedia : M : MO : MOU : Mountain High

right Mountain High resort is a winter resort in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County in California. Mountain High is the most-visited resort in Southern California, and is often extremely crowded on weekends and holidays (especially at the mountain's West Resort), with long lines for lifts and services. The resort is located along the California State Highway 2 just past Wrightwood. The elevation of the resort is 6,600 to 8,200 feet for the Mountain High East Resort, 7,000 to 8,000 feet for the West Resort and 7,200 to 7,800 feet for the North Resort.

Olympic History

As many as 70 years ago ski enthusiasts began skiing in the area now known as Mountain High. In 1929 the construction began on, at the time, the world's largest ski jump to attract the 1932 Winter Olympics, and two years later it was complete. In 1931 about three weeks after the structure had been built Alf Engen set the new world record by jumping 243 feet. Local legend has it that Big Pines, California (Which is not too far from today's West Resort) was awarded the 1932 winter olympics but that due to poor snow conditions the winter games were moved to Lake Placid, New York. However, the [official olympic history] of the 1932 winter games establishes that the games were awarded to Lake Placid on April 10, 1929.

West Resort

rightThe Mountain High West Resort (7,000-8,000 ft.) is the most popular of the three resorts, and most of its terrain has been dedicated to Mountain High's Faultline Terrain Park. Faultline creates some of the most original terrain features in the area, such as the Slayer Box, Paradox, the Double Trouble Wall Ride, and many, many others. Mountain High and Faultline also host many large events such as the $25,000 Kawasaki Triple Big Air Event, the Active Sponsor Me Jib Jam, and Utility Boardshop's Battle of the Boards. The West Resort is definitely a snowboarder's resort, and most of the customers (2/3 to 3/4 or more) are snowboard riders. Aside from the terrain parks, the West Resort also has excellent glade skiing and snowboarding in an area known as "The Reef." This area is only open when there is a substantial amount of snow. The West Resort is also usually the first resort in Southern California to open and the last to close. The West Resort has now closed for the 2005-2006 season, but will reopen next fall.

East Resort

The Mountain High East Resort (6,600-8,200 ft.) is the alpine experience of the resort, it goes 1.6 miles up into the mountains. The longest run at Mountain High (Goldrush) at 1.6 miles is located at the East Resort, and not only is it the longest run at Mountain High but the longest in the region. The East resort boasts long carving terrain perfect for both skiers and snowboarders alike. The East Resort's base area is planned to host Mountain High's second annual "Buck Off" Event where the resort ships in 80 tons of snow which will take place on September 2, 2006. The area will only be open to 2006-2007 Season Pass Holders, and this exclusive group will be allowed to test out Mountain High's new terrain park features for the 2006-2007 Winter Season.

North Resort

The Mountain High North Resort (7,200-7,800 ft.) is the newest of the three resorts, dedicated to mainly beginner and intermediate terrain. This resort being new, only has one quad chair lift and three handle tows, but none the less the North Resort is the perfect area to learn how to ski and snowboard so one can move up to the "big" resorts (The East and West). Due to lack of snowmaking the North Resort only opened for one day for the 2005-2006 season, it is now closed for winter sports.

Sunrise Disc Golf

right While the other resorts are closed the Mountain High North Resort is open during the summer to offer Disc Golf. "Sunrise" as it is called will offer 3 courses with 9 holes that meander throughout the Angeles National Forest. The course was first developed in 1999 by Dave Dunnipace when the resort was still known as Ski Sunrise. "Sunrise" is planned to host a disc golf tournament on August 26th through the 27th called "Sunrise Showdown" according to the [Southern California Disc Golf Association].

The North Pole Tubing Park

The [North Pole Tubing Park] is a part of the North Resort that is dedicated entirely to Snow Tubing. This state-of-the-art tubing facility is served by two handle tows and has many lanes, so many tubers can get down all at once. The North Pole Tubing Park has now closed for the 2005-2006 winter season. One of the main improvements that Mountain High wishes to accomplish over the summer would be to expand the Tubing Park and add a Magic Carpet lift to offer better access.
