Mrs. McGinty's Dead (published in 1952) is a detective fiction novel by Agatha Christie, featuring her characters Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver.
Plot
Mrs McGinty dies from a brutal blow to the back of her head. Suspicion immediately falls on her shifty lodger, James Bently, whose clothes reveals traces of the victim's blood and hair. Yet something is amiss: Bentley just doesn't look like a murderer to the experienced eye of Superintendent Spence. Doubting the evidence he himself collected, he approaches Poirot to investigate further. Poirot has to bear a lot of hardships including a draughty guest house, horrendous cooking and an attempt on his life, before the murderer is unmasked.
Trivia
Mrs.Oliver who is a very amiable caricature of Dame Agatha herself, remarks about her gaffes in her books. One can see the reference to Death in the Clouds, where she'd made the blow pipe a foot and a half long, instead of the actual four feet!
Film versions
The novel was adapted by MGM in 1964 as "Murder Most Foul". However, in an unusual move, the character of Poirot was replaced with Christie's other most famous detective Miss Marple (portrayed by Margaret Rutherford).
David Suchet and, possibly, Zoe Wannamaker will star as Poirot and Oliver in an upcoming adaptation.
