Mugla Province
Encyclopedia : M : MU : MUG : Mugla Province
Muğla is a province in southwestern Turkey, along the Aegean Sea. Its seat is Muğla, is about 20 km. inland, but some of Turkey's largest holiday resorts such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye can be found on the coastline of the province. It also includes the World Heritage Site of Letoon near Fethiye.
The economy of Muğla relies on the SEKA paper factory, mining, agriculture, forestry and trading, and in particular on tourism.
Politics
In Turkey's 2004 local elections, Provincial General Assembly votes were divided between the incumbent AKP (31,25 %), traditional center-left CHP (26,3 %) and the traditional center-right DYP (20,98 %). The rightist MHP campaigning on Turkish-identity consciousness arguments had obtained a further 9,5 % (especially in the Fethiye district), with the other two parties of the former (till November, 2002) coalition government, urban right ANAP and Bülent Ecevit's center-left DSP ebbing down to 2,2-3,4 %.
