Municipal Borough of Dagenham

Encyclopedia : M : MU : MUN : Municipal Borough of Dagenham

Dagenham was a local government district in south west Essex from 1926 to 1965 around the town of Dagenham.

It was created an urban district in 1926 from the parish of Dagenham, previously part of Romford Rural District and gained the status of municipal borough in 1938. The district was formed because of the dramatic rise in population caused by the change in use of land from mostly farming to large scale suburban housing development and industrial use such as the Ford Motor Company factory.

In 1965 the municipal borough was abolished by the London Government Act 1963 and its area transferred to Greater London from Essex. Its former area was combined with parts of other districts to form the present-day London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and a small part of the borough (a protustion northwards that included Hog Hill) became part of the London Borough of Redbridge.
