Municipal solid waste

Municipal solid waste (MSW) includes household and commercial wastes generated in a municipal or notified areas. They are in either solid or semisolid form and generally exclude industrial hazardous wastes.
There are four broad categories of MSW:
- Biodegradable waste: food & kitchen waste, garden wastes, street sweepings etc. These are all wastes.
- Recyclable material: paper, glass, bottles, cans, metals, certain [plastic]s, etc.
- Inert waste: construction waste, dirt, rocks, debris.
- Composite wastes: Waste clothing, Tetra Paks
- Domestic hazardous waste & toxic waste: medication, paints, chemicals, light bulbs, spray cans, fertilizer and pesticide containers, batteries, shoe polish, etc.
