Municipal Reform 2007
As of July 2004, the government is in the process of reforming the regions (the Municipal Reform, Kommunalreformen). The 13 counties (amter) will be replaced with 5 new regions (regioner), while most of the 270 municipalities will be consolidated into 98 larger units of at least 20,000 inhabitants and take over most of the responsibilities of the current counties. Of the present municipalities, 32 will not merge, because they already have 20,000 inhabitants or will sign a cooperation agreement with a larger municipality.
