The
muumuu (more often spelled as
muumuu or
mumu) is a loose dress of
Hawaiian origin that hangs from the shoulder. Like the
Aloha shirt, muumuu exports are often brilliantly colored with floral patterns of generic Polynesian motifs designed for casual, informal wear. Muumuu for local Hawaii residents are more subdued in tone, adorned with traditional Hawaiian quilt designs in muted colors. Muumuu are not as widely worn at work as the aloha shirt. Bell-shaped muumuu are also popular as
maternity gowns because they do not restrict the waist.
The word muumuu means cut-off or amputated, as the dress is derived from the holokū in missing the train or yoke of the latter, Ultimately both of them are derived from Mother Hubbard (dress)
