Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, over a dozen complexes have been built in Florida since 1984. Muvico has since expanded to one franchise each in Maryland (see Arundel Mills) and Tennessee.
Early History
Muvico Theatres started with the acquisition of a 23-screen theatre in Coral Springs, Florida. Between 1985 and 1995, Muvico bought or built eight theatres totaling 59 screens; the California Club in North Miami was among these eight theatres. However, in 1995, Muvico sold all of its theatres and two leases, except for the Palm Harbor 10 in Palm Harbor, Florida. The purpose of that sale was to allow Muvico to operate more efficiently against its competition -- namely, Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark, and AMC Theatres. A year later, Muvico bought five theatres in South and Central Florida, totaling 43 screens, as well as another eight-screen theater in South Florida. Muvico built its first megaplex theatre in 1998 in Orlando; it is called Muvico Pointe 21. They subsequently opened a 18-screen theatre in Pompano Beach, Florida, and a 24-screen megaplex in Davie, Florida. In 2000, Muvico opened four more megaplexes in Florida and one in Arundel Mills in Hanover, Maryland, totaling 104 screens. In 2001, Muvico opened the Peabody Place 22 in Tennessee.Muvico's Plans for Growth
Muvico plans to construct or lease 11 more theatres between next year and 2009.See also
