My War

Encyclopedia : M : MY : MYW : My War

My War is the second full length album by seminal American hardcore band Black Flag. It was released in 1984 on SST Records. Greg Ginn played both bass and guitar on this album, Dale Nixon (credited for playing bass on the album) is a pseudonym. The album was released after a long period where the band could not release any albums due to a legal dispute with Unicorn Records, which disappointed many fans seeking a followup to the acclaimed Damaged.

The first 6 songs are similar to the material on Damaged, but the last 3 songs are what the album is most famous for. They are at about half the pace of the band's earlier material and are very powerful and heavy, much unlike the fast-paced material the band had become known for. These are also very influential, sending a message that you don't have to play fast to be punk. Critics said that the band had sold out because they were performing material like this.

Views on the album are generally split by fans; some who loved the early punk rock material were let down by this release while some see it as completely groundbreaking.

My War would become one of the albums to greatly influence Kurt Cobain, who often included it in his "favorite albums" lists in his Journals.
