N-number

Encyclopedia : N : NN : NNU : N-number

An "N-number" is an Aircraft Registration number used in the United States. All aircraft registered there have a number starting with N (e.g. N12345). Other countries have different registration schemes: Canadian numbers start with C, British ones G, German ones D, and so forth. N-numbers do not have to consist only of numbers. (e.g. N12ABC). N-numbers may only consist of 1 to 5 characters and must start with a number.

Older aircraft may have a second letter in its identifier. NC is for commercial aircraft, NX is for experimental aircraft, and so on. These are no longer used, but still exist on older aircraft. This additional letter is not actually part of the aircraft identification. (e.g. NC12345 same as N12345)
