N S Madhavan is one of the best writers of fiction in Malayalam. He started his writing career as a student with the short story 'Sisu' which won the first prize in a contest organised by the well-known Malayalam weekly magazine, Matrubhumi in 1971. Since then he has come out with four collections of short stories, a novel and two plays. His collections of short fiction are: Higuita Thiruth Chulamedile Savangal Paryaya Kathakal He has also ventured into writing novels with his debut Lanthanbatheriyile Luthiniyakal, published in 2004 and has gone into seven editions since then. Madhavan is a meticulous writer and can undoubtedly be considered as the best among contemporary Malayalam short story writers. His art gives importance to minute details and exemplifies the manifest skill and compact craft that short fiction as a genre demands. In Madhavan the subtle connections of criss-crossing dialogues and interlacing plots ultimately reveal an integrated narrative continnum. N S Madhavan's contribution to the genre of short story, which is dying in most parts of the world, is unique and noteworthy. By profession, N.S. Madhavan is an I.A.S officer of Bihar cadre. He is presently Secretary and Commissioner in the Planning and Development Department in Bihar. Madhavan is married and has a daughter.
