N21 road

Encyclopedia : N : N2 : N21 : N21 road

The N21 road is a National Primary Route in Ireland, forming part of the overall route from Limerick to Tralee. The N21 route commences near Patrickswell, about 8 km southwest of Limerick city, where the main N20 dual-carriageway out of the city becomes the N21 (the N20 Limerick–Cork route continuing on a diverging road). The 10.9 km section of dual-carriageway was opened in 2001.

Prior to the completion of this dual-carriageway (leaving Limerick city from the south, at Childers Road, with a link to the new Southeastern ring road), the N20 route left the city via the southwest, through Raheen and Patrickswell (where the N21 commenced).

The new road continues as far as the scenic tourist village of Adare, becoming standard two-lane road shortly beforehand. Although a bypass is planned, the N21 traffic flows through the main street of the village as of 2005. A bypass of Adare is not expected to be completed until 2009 or 2010.

The N21 runs by croagh and,Rathkeale, which was bypassed in 1990, before entering Newcastlewest and filtering through the town. Further along the route the N21 passes through Templeglanton, before going through the major town of Abbeyfeale. The 30 km Newcastle West/Abbeyfeale road scheme is at the planning stage as of 2005. The road continues southwest, crossing into County Kerry near Kilkinlea.

At Castleisland, the N21 heads west to Tralee. The short N23 road continues southwest to Farranfore, allowing traffic to continue south along the N22 to Killarney.

The N21 between the Kerry/Limerick border and Tralee has been improved in recent years. A 6 km section north of Castleisland was overlayed and brought up to standard in 1999. An 11 km new section between Ballycarty (near Tralee) and Castleisland was open in early 2001. This was followed by the 3km Tralee to Ballycarty section opened in April 2005. Currently the 7 km section from Knocknagoshel to Abbeyfeale is under construction and is expected to open in July 2006. The Castleisland bypass is expected to commence construction in 2006.
