The architectural firm of NBBJ was formed in Seattle in 1943, as Naramore, Bain, Brady and Johanson, when four Seattle architects joined together to take on the design of a support community for a large naval shipyard. As specialists in housing, healthcare, and education, this partnership offered something unique to clients—a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to projects.
In the initial years, NBBJ grew as a regional leader in the Pacific Northwest, forming relationships with local businesses, institutions, and governments. NBBJ’s practice of designing for clients’ needs became evident early on. Many clients from the 50s and 60s continue to collaborate with them.
In the 1970s, NBBJ was a pioneer in expanding the perspectives brought to creating high performance environments. They added analysts, cost consultants and economists to their teams to address the entire life cycle of facilities and real estate. In 1976, a Columbus architectural firm of Godwin Nitschke Bohm collaborated with NBBJ on a large project, later merging with NBBJ.
In the 1980s NBBJ transformed traditional architectural practice to create a design culture that enabled broad participation in ideas and absolute ownership of the outcome among all staff. With a mission to be "the best design firm in the world,” NBBJ’s culture attracts the top talent. At NBBJ, “best” has to balance design, technology, and process at the highest level so that their work adds maximum value for clients and society.
In the 1990s, they became one of the world leaders in design by creating “process design” which maps a success path for each project in partnership with all stakeholders. This created a period of growth for NBBJ. Field offices in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East were added to the U.S. offices, enabling resources to be shared among the specialized studios in each geographical location.
Today, the body of completed work that has positively transformed clients continues to grow. NBBJ is the third largest design practice in the United States, the fifth largest in the world.
The company maintains offices in Beijing, Columbus, Dubai, London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Shanghai.
