Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW) is a Western Canadian based professional wrestling promotion run under the National Wrestling Alliance banner. It has been under the NWA banner since 1998.
History
The promotion is being operated by Dave Republic and "Gorgeous" Michelle Starr (as of 1996-2006). ECCW is run out of Vancouver, British Columbia, putting on shows in the Russian Community Center, and the Bridgeview Hall in Surrey. Another place in Vancouver where you can find them is the Croatian Center, which they use when the Russian Community Center is booked. In earlier years, ECCW ran its main shows at the Eagles Hall (now the Burr Theatre) in New Westminster before moving to Vancouver. On day two of the 2005 Pacific Cup tournament on April 23, 2005, Aaron Idol beat Puma and Bryan Danielson in a triple threat match in the finals of the Pacific Cup tournament that last 30 minutes. After the match Danielson broke the Pacific Cup trophy and said that ECCW was inferior to New Japan Pro Wrestling. Puma and Danielson then beat down Idol. Promoter Dave Republic then issued a challenge to New Japan and gave Antonio Inoki 30 days to respond. Inoki did not reply and the challenge was then dropped as a result.
On December 8th, 2005, ECCW announced that they had purchased independent group Top Ranked Wrestling (TRW), which had a program on KVOS (Channel 23 in Vancouver) on Saturday afternoons. ECCW's take over of the Top Ranked Wrestling program (now called NWA Top Ranked Wrestling or NWA-TRW) would be effective January 7th, 2006 in time for their 10th Anniversary celebrations. However, the promotion's first TV tapings happened at "Season's Beatings" on December 23rd, 2005.
NWA-TRW has been picked up for a second season. ECCW has constantly had a rating of around .3 which is abnormally high for an independent promotion, and given the time slot, it is one of the highest ranked wrestling shows outside of WWE and TNA. Originally a one-hour show, NWA-TRW was cut to a 30-minute program in the spring of 2006.
For 5 of the past 6 years, ECCW has held their yearly tournament called the Pacific Cup. As of last update, no 2006 version was scheduled. As well, in 2004 ECCW held the first, and so far only, tag version of the Pacific Cup.
