Nadia (or Nadine) is a name commonly used in European and Arabic countries. In Europe (Slavic), it can stand for Hope, being a diminutive of the Russian name Надежда (Nadyezhda) with that meaning; Nadine is a French form of this diminutive. The name of Lenin's wife was also Nadia. In the Arabic world, the name Nadia is derived from the Egyptian word for "The first dawn on a flower". The german versions "Nadine" and "Nadina" mean "courage of a bear".

Nadia also means "the caller" or "the announcer" in Arabic.
