Nappe

Encyclopedia : N : NA : NAP : Nappe

In geology, a nappe is a large sheetlike body of rock that has been moved far from its original position. Nappes form during continental plate collisions, when folds are sheared so much that they fold back over on themselves and break apart. The resulting structure is a large-scale recumbent fold. The term stems from the French word for tablecloth.

In geometry, a nappe is half of a double cone.

Nappe can also refer to a sheet of water flowing over a dam or similar structure.

In cooking, nappe refers to either the ability of a liquid to "coat the back of a spoon" or the act of coating a food (i.e. to nappe a leg of lamb with glaze).
