Narayan Dattatraya Apte was born in the year 1911. He was executed on 15, Nov. 1949, at Ambala Jail for his involvement in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Apte worked with Nathuram Godse for almost 6 years under the Hindu Mahasabha. Apte was present on the spot of assassination with Nathuram Godse. The prosecution described him as the brain behind conspiracy.

In 1932 he graduated from Bombay University as a Bachelor of Science. After obtaining his B.Sc., Degree, Nana accepted a teacher's job at Ahmednagar. During his stay at Ahmednagar he was married to Mr Phadtare's daughter named Champa. He appeared for his B.T. examination and got his degree. While Gandhiji was staying at Panchagani a group of some twenty-five young men led by Nana staged a protest against Gandhiji's policies on 22nd July 1944. Apte planned and executed another such demonstration before Gandhiji when he was staying in the sweepers' colony in Delhi. He was also involved in the fifth and final attempt to assassinate Gandhi

Mr. Apte's wife is still referred as Soubhagyawati Champu-tai (Soubhagyawati precedes the name of a married Hindu woman whose husband is alive and "tai" in Marathi means elder sister) as he told her a day before his execution "If you believe in the immortality of the soul, then you are and will remain Soubhagyavati even after my death! Move about in the society wearing your external symbols of your Soubhagya."
