Encyclopedia : N : NA : NAT : National Teacher of the Year
The National Teacher of the Year is a teacher award in the United States. The program began in 1952, as a project by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and aims to reward excellence in teaching.
Selection process
Profiles of the winners of the various State Teacher of the Year awards are submitted to a selection committee made up of representatives from each of the major education organizations. The winner is chosen based on their biography and eight essays they must submit.Duties
The National Teacher does not have to teach for their year of recognition, and instead acts as a spokesperson and advocate for the teaching profession. The teacher's state and district continues to pay his/her salary in this year.
