Canada's National War Memorial is located in Confederation Square in Ottawa, the nation's capital. Dedicated in 1939 in commemoration of the First World War, the memorial consists of a tall stone arch adorned with metal sculptures. The main work, titled The Response, depicts a diverse group of soldiers and servicepeople marching forward below the arch; one is mounted, and several tote a gun carriage. The top of the arch features figures representing peace and freedom.

Although made to commemorate WWI, the memorial also officially remembers the Second World War and Korean War. It also features the Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, placed in 2000 in front of the memorial.

The original model upon which the memorial was based can be viewed at the Canadian War Museum.

After the Canada Day celebrations on July 1, 2006, several young men were photographed urinating on the Memorial, causing controversy and outrage in the country and particularily among veterans. An investigation has identified the three men were idenified as two minors (under 18 years of age) from Ottawa and one adult (23 years in age) from outside of Ottawa.

A follow up to the July 1st unrinations found one man indentified as 23 year old Stephen Fernandes of Montreal. He was charged was charged Friday with mischief for allegedly urinating in the same area. One of the teens wrote a letter of appology to the Ottawa police while the other teen apologized to the legion, veterans of Canada, and the citizens of Canada.

In an interview with CTV, Fernandes said that he was very sorry for unrinating on the memorial and that he didn't want to offend anyone. Fernandes was intoxicated after drinking 26 ounces of alcohol on Canada Day. He said he didn't remember anything. [link]

He faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
