Natural Resources Canada

Encyclopedia : N : NA : NAT : Natural Resources Canada

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), is a department of the government of Canada responsible for natural resources, energy, minerals and metals, forests, earth sciences, mapping and remote sensing. Under the Canadian constitution, responsibility for natural resources belongs to the provinces, not the federal government, but the federal government has jurisdiction over off-shore resources, trade and commerce in natural resources, over statistics, over international relations, and over boundaries. Its involvement in natural resources goes back to the creation of the first Canadian government scientific entity by the Province of Canada in 1842.

The Minister of Natural Resources as of February 6, 2006 is Gary Lunn.

The department is governed by the Resources and Technical Surveys Act, R.S.C., c.R-7 and the Department of Natural Resources Act, S.C. 1994, c. 41.
