Naumburg is at least 1,000 years old. The most important architectural landmark of the town is the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral (also known as Naumburger Dom), an impressive late Romanesque and Gothic Cathedral, that has been built between 13th-15th centuries. Its interior includes glass windows from the Middle Ages, as well as the famous statues of the founders of the cathedral, Margrave Ekkehard and his wife Uta. Other attractions include late Gothic town hall (Rathaus), late Renaissance residence of the Duke Moritz of Saxony-Zeitz, Gothic St. Wenceslas Church with paintings of Lucas Cranach the Elder and the Hildebrandt organ that Johann Sebastian Bach played on. Some parts of medieval town fortifications have survived till today, including old town gate Marientor. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spent his childhood in Naumburg in the family house, now a museum. The former bishop's castle Schönburg overlooks the town and the Saale River. The town is in a wine-growing region, with numerous vineyards in the surrounding area.
People
One of the most significant composers for the organ in Renaissance Germany, Elias Ammerbach, was born in Naumburg in 1530.
