Nautilus Middle School is a two year comprehensive school located in Miami Beach, Florida, United States.
History
Originally an elementary school teaching 400 students in Kindergarten through grade 8, Nautilus School opened in 1949. In 1955 the school converted to a middle school serving all of Miami Beach. At its peak, the student population reached 1600, with 900 of those arriving by bus.The original school building was demolished in 1995 and two new buildings were erected to meet the changing needs of the school.
Students and faculty
It is now a middle school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools teaching grades 7 and 8. It provides a standard academic curriculum as well as an extensive music program. The school also provides courses in ESOL for students whose first language is not English. Most students will move on to Miami Beach Senior High School on completion of eighth grade.Approximately 1400 students attend Nautilus Middle School. The student body is primarily Hispanic (72%). About 20% of the students are classified as having Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
It has been rated as a "B" school by the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test since 2001.
The school employs 67 teachers. As of 2005, the school principal is Caridad Figueredo.
School uniforms
The school enforces a policy of school uniforms. All students must wear black or beige trousers and red, white, or black mongrammed shirts or blouses. The uniform policy is the same for both male and female students; skirts, dresses, and shorts are not permitted.Campus
The school is located on approximately 5 acres (20,000 m²) of land at 4301 North Michigan Avenue, Miami Beach, adjacent to Polo Park.External links
