Biography
Early life and career
Andrews was born in London, England and is of Indian descent. He was raised in Wandsworth, South London (beside the River Thames) to a fairly conservative family. At the age of 16, whilst at Emanuel School, he fell in love with his Mathematics teacher, Geraldine Feakins, with whom he had a son, Jaisal, born in 1992.[link] Naveen (which means "new" in Hindi and is a relatively common name in India) was quoted in an interview later on saying that "[his] father would call [him] a prostitute" albeit being famous at his school "for going out with a maths teacher".He went on and auditioned for drama school. He was accepted at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Ewan McGregor and David Thewlis (of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). His studies paid off when he won a role in Hanif Kureshi's film, London Kills Me (1991). He is best known for his role as Kip in The English Patient (1996) and as Sayid in the popular television series Lost (2004).
In 2006, he was voted one of People Magazine's 'World's Most Beautiful People'.
Personal life
Andrews is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. He suffered from these conditions when he lived in London during his early twenties, and his promising screen career nearly ended. Andrews was forced to move across the Atlantic to the United States to seek rehabilitation and get his life back on track. His efforts were successful, but he says that London provides painful memories of his alcohol and heroin addictions. He is in a relationship with actress Barbara Hershey and they currently live Los Angeles, California. The couple separated briefly in 2005, and during the time, Andrews had a son with another woman. He and Hershey later reconciled.[link]
