Nazareth is a city in Castro County, Texas, United States. The population was 356 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²), all land.
History
The city of Nazareth is best known for the High School basketball teams that have played there. Among them, the Nazareth Swiftettes have won seventeen state championships, a current public school national record. The mens teams have collected three state championships and have been to state nine times.Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 356 people, 125 households, and 93 families residing in the city. The population density was 392.7/km² (1,022.1/mi²). There were 140 housing units at an average density of 154.4/km² (402.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.91% White, 1.12% from other races, and 1.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.90% of the population.There were 125 households out of which 46.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% were married couples living together, 2.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 24.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.43.
In the city the population was spread out with 34.3% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 114.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $36,875, and the median income for a family was $46,375. Males had a median income of $28,438 versus $21,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,756. About 2.9% of families and 4.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.
