NedCar, or officially Netherlands Car B.V., is the only large-scale automobile producer in the Netherlands. It is based Born. It started in August 1991 as a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors, Volvo and the Dutch State. It is currently 100% owned by Mitsubishi.
History
In the 1970s, Swedish car company Volvo acquired the car activities of Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek (DAF). When it threatened to close these down in the early 1990s, the Dutch government stepped in, and a partner was found in Mitsubishi. The joint venture started in August 1991, but it was only in 1996 when the name was changed from Volvo Car B.V. to Netherlands Car B.V.. On 15 February 1999 the Dutch government sold its shares to its two partners, who then owned 50% each. Later, on 30 March 2001, Volvo sold its shares to Mitsubishi, who now owns 100%. NedCar built Volvo automobiles until 2004. Currently it produces the Mitsubishi Colt and the Smart Forfour, through Mitsubishi's links with DaimlerChrysler. However, because of disappointing sales, DaimlerChrysler plans to stop the production of the Smart Forfour.
