Neelix is a fictional character on "", played by Ethan Phillips.
Overview
Neelix is originally from Rinax, a moon of the planet Talax, in the Delta quadrant. His family, including a sister named Alexia, were killed in a conflict with the Haakonian Order. This forever haunted Neelix, although he masked it with his bright, constantly cheerful personality.
In the pilot episode "Caretaker", Neelix and his Ocampan girlfriend Kes were rescued from the Kazon, then joined the Voyager crew. Neelix offered his services as a guide to the Delta quadrant. He promptly appointed himself "Morale Officer" and soon took over the mess hall and became cook, though his culinary skills were not entirely flawless (replicator usage had to be rationed in light of Voyager's limited power supplies). Captain Janeway tolerated Neelix with a mixture of amusement and mild frustration. As the series progressed, Neelix became more and more valuable to the crew of Voyager, and earned the respect of his crewmates.
While Kes and Neelix were involved in a romantic relationship when they came aboard Voyager, Kes ultimately stopped seeing Neelix because of his jealousy and possessiveness. The two remained good friends, however.
Neelix considered Security chief Tuvok a friend, and was always trying to "cheer up" the Vulcan. Tuvok, in turn, "tolerated" Neelix, and his attitude did not change even after being fused with him into a being called "Tuvix" during a transporter mishap. But, they eventually resolved their issues, and became friends. Neelix was also very close to Samantha Wildman and her daughter Naomi.
Neelix was once deeply religious, but lost his faith when he was dead for several hours, yet had no vision of an afterlife (he was brought back to life with Borg technology employed by Seven of Nine). Neelix was so distraught by this that he wanted to commit suicide, but eventually Chakotay convinced him that life was worth living whether there is an afterlife or not.
Neelix left Voyager in the final season episode "Homestead", when he goes to live on an asteroid-based colony of exiled Talaxians. Capt. Kathryn Janeway appointed Neelix as the "official" Ambassador for Starfleet in the Delta Quadrant, and he bid the crew a fond farewell. He had a cameo in a later episode, establishing that Neelix did indeed stay in contact with his friends.
Trivia
"Pathfinder" project engineer (and former USS Enterprise-D crewmember) Reginald Barclay named his cat "Neelix". Barclay appeared on a few Voyager episodes as well.
Star Trek makeup artist Michael Westmore based Neelix's spotted, warthog-like design on a combination of various animals from the Disney film The Lion King.
