Nemesis is a fictional monster and recurring boss that appears in the eponymous survival horror game, . He is one of the most powerful bioweapons created by the fictional Umbrella Corporation.

Origin

Nemesis is one of the deadliest Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.) created by Umbrella Corporation. His character model was based off a rejected design for Mr. X, a Tyrant featured in Resident Evil 2. He is an 8-foot-tall monster, wearing a black trenchcoat and boots. Other attributes include a deeply scarred, misshapen face, with tentacles hideously protruding from his upper-body. His left arm is smaller and less muscular compared to his right because of the numerous tentacles inside it.

The Nemesis project was headed by the European Branch of Umbrella (France division) during the 1980s, independent of the Tyrant research at the Arklay facility. Inserting the Nemesis parasite inside a host had a lower success rate because there is only 1 in 60,000,000 people with a compatible DNA that will accept the parasite. An incompatible host would die a few minutes after the Nemesis parasite took control of its brain.

In 1988, as an attempt to steal credit for the Nemesis project, Albert Wesker used his connections with Ozwell E. Spencer to acquire a specimen. He planned to use it on Lisa Trevor, a human guinea pig at the Arklay facility. She was subjected to every virus yet created by Umbrella, including (but not limited to); the T-Virus and the Mother and Progenitor Viruses without dying. After being injected with the Nemesis parasite, it travelled to her brain and disappeared (Wesker believed it destroyed, but in the remake of Resident Evil, Lisa Trevor is depicted with Nemesis-like tentacles). Afterwards, a new virus was discovered in her system, which William Birkin would spend the next decade developing into the G-Virus.

Early tests on the Nemesis Parasite resulted in the host dying a few minutes after implantation. This problem was solved by Umbrella France. During late 1997 and early 1998, Umbrella France produced 4 NE-A Parasites to be spliced with 4 T-103 mass production model Tyrants. The first experiment was a failure, due to the fact that the parasite allowed the host to retain cognitive thinking and therefore, allowed it to attempt to escape the facility. This first Nemesis was destroyed. The second one had its intelligence restricted by giving inhibitors that would limit the growth of the brain cells of the Nemesis parasite. This Nemesis was sent to Raccoon City during an outbreak of the T-Virus, where it was to be tested in the field, as well as assassinate any S.T.A.R.S. members who might try to release information of Umbrella's illegal activities to the media and/or the world's governments.

How Umbrella managed to acquire a compatible host is unknown. The events of Resident Evil 3 take place over the course of three days, with Nemesis active throughout this time. It displayed greater intelligence than the Tyrant deployed by Umbrella to Raccoon City. The Nemesis has a limited speech capacity, as well as being able to competently use a rocket launcher. The fact that Tyrants continue to be the main B.O.W. used and developed by Umbrella since the incident at Raccoon suggests that the Nemesis project is still impractical because it has few compatible hosts and is very difficult to produce.

The "Nemesis-T", appearing in Claire's dream, possibly one of the other four Nemesis experiments, it was deployed at Rockfort Island during the events of Resident Evil: Gun Survivor 2. It would appear if you took too much time in a level and was capable of killing you in one hit if it caught you.

One Nemesis still remains unaccounted for.

Role in Resident Evil 3

It is not known how or when Nemesis was deployed to Raccoon City. The first mention of his presence comes on September 28th, 1998 when terrified S.T.A.R.S. member Brad Vickers states that he and the rest of the S.T.A.R.S team will be hunted down by a new creature. Soon thereafter, the protagonist, Jill Valentine, witnesses Nemesis killing Brad outside of Raccoon City's police station. From here on, Nemesis' role is that of an extremely tough and persistent boss.

Nemesis' mission is quite simple. He was sent to search for and destroy remaining S.T.A.R.S members within Raccoon City - thereby preventing information regarding illegal activities by Umbrella from reaching the press and the world's governments. He comes well-equipped with heavy armor and a rocket launcher, though generally prefers brute force and later, use of his tentacles while attacking. Through the course of the game, Nemesis managed to kill just one S.T.A.R.S member; the aforementioned Brad Vickers. Brad's corpse reanimates and he can be seen as an unusually strong zombie in Resident Evil 2, close to where Nemesis dispatched him. Throughout the game, Nemesis pursues Jill Valentine through Raccoon City - with several showdowns occurring throughout the game. Nemesis at one point severely hinders Jill's escape by shooting down a rescue helicopter with his Rocket Launcher and shortly after, infecting her with the T-Virus, leaving her temporarily incapacitated. Jill is later cured by a sophisticated medicine created by ally Carlos Oliveira. Eventually, Nemesis, still relentlessly pursuing Jill, reaches an Umbrella facility known only as the "Dead Factory".

Death

Despite his gargantuan strength, Nemesis was not immune to detrimental mutations. Over the course of Resident Evil 3, he mutates due to the sheer damage he sustains from small arms fire, immolation, grenades, electric shock as well as exposure to acid intended for the breakdown of industrial waste. These all contribute to a loss of stability in his body - his armor is gradually shredded in favor of extraordinarily huge flesh/tentacle mutations. Towards the end of his life, his mutations are out of control - reducing him to a cumbersome, slow, yet immensely strong mass of acid-ridden flesh and disfigured limbs. In the final mutations, the similarity to several other B.O.W.s is notable, particularly to G-Virus carriers. This may prove that all the viruses Umbrella has experimented with are, in fact, still bound by the same defects.

His first mutation is relatively benign, occurring after a severe exposure to fire. After falling into a fire his jacket is burnt off. Nemesis discards his damaged rocket launcher, and in future encounters uses his tentacles as a whip.

Nemesis transforms into his final state soon after a particularly deadly encounter with acid, which destroys many of his tentacles and mutilates his arms and head. Despite this, he remains very much alive. He is met for the final time by Jill when he tumbles through the roof of a storage area located in a scrapyard behind the "Dead Factory". After devouring a part of Tyrant (T-103), he mutates. Nemesis by now is a fleshy, acid-saturated, congealed mass with several gigantic eyes, bubble-like lumps forming on his back and hideously deformed limbs. Having lost most of his original agility he desperately attempts to clamber towards Jill, frantically spitting putrid venom in the process.

It is here that Nemesis meets his demise. He takes a massive shot of energy fired from a top secret United States Army railgun called Paracelsus' Sword. Upon sustaining such a huge blast, he lies fatally wounded and writhing in agony but still continues to pursue and attack Jill. He is finally dispatched by several rounds from Jill's .44 revolver.

After Jill kills the creature with her Magnum, she leaves its twitching remains behind and evacuates Raccoon City via helicopter. The remains were very likely vaporized in an explosion organized by the US government, which reduced virtually all of Raccoon City to a crater.

However, the player has a choice to kill Nemesis or not. Should they choose not to, Nemesis is merely killed in the missile attack instead of by Jill, as he is mortally wounded and incapable of escaping.

Mentions in other Resident Evil games

Nemesis is mentioned in an EX File in Resident Evil 2 for the Nintendo 64. In a replay A scenario game (as Claire or Leon), you can stumble upon Brad Vickers as a zombie if you avoid picking up any items in the trek to the police station; in the corresponding B scenario, Brad will be in the same location beneath the police station stairs if you triggered his appearance in the scenario A game. Dispatching him and searching his corpse reveals a journal that mentions that he is being pursued by a brute with a rocket launcher and a trench coat; in other words, Nemesis. The Nintendo 64 version was released two months after the very first release of Resident Evil 3, in Japan. Due to the lack of other Resident Evil games on the Nintendo 64 (with the exception of the then-planned and canceled Resident Evil Zero), the connection was added to tie Nintendo 64 gamers to the rest of the series. This and all the other EX FIles are only available on the Nintendo 64 version and are not available in the subsequent Dreamcast and Nintendo GameCube versions.

Once inside of the Umbrella facility seen in the latter segment of Resident, one can choose to access a secured area by either finding a special security key, or forego that by typing in a new password into the security terminal. The password, it is explained, is the name of the "latest version of the Tyrant project": the password turns out as Nemesis.

Nemesis-T

In , A newer version of the Nemesis appears called the Nemesis-T. The Nemesis-T is the last boss you encounter in . It is completely impossible to kill, you can only run away from it. It looks almost exactly like the original Nemesis but has a translucent orange skin colour. Nemesis-T was contained on Rockfort Island, the reason for this, according to a file found in the game, is to help protect the lab in case of an emergency, such as a secret-agent appearing. But keep in mind that all of this was just a dream from Claire when she was unconsious on the plane in the original Code Veronica.

If you collect all the gem pieces found out throughout the game, you will fight Nemesis-T after defeating Tyrant, you defeat this new challenge with help of the Linear Launcher.

Parodies

A scene from the VG Cats Christmas comic "It's The Thought That Counts...", [strip 182] saw Santa making a slight mix-up in his list, having Nemesis' bazooka delivered to a little girl (in the same way, Nemesis receives the girl's Barbie doll, and falls in loves with it too!).
