Ness Ziona (Hebrew: נס ציונה, Nes Ẓiyyona; unofficially also spelled Nes Ziona and Nes Tziona) is a city in the Center District of Israel in Israel. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of 2004 the city had a total population of 27,800.
History
Ness Ziona was founded in 1883. It is named after a phrase in Jeremiah 4,6.Demographics
According to CBS, in 2001 the ethnic makeup of the city was 99.6% Jewish and other non-Arabs, without significant Arab population. In 2001 there were 67 immigrant settlers. See Population groups in Israel.According to CBS, in 2001 there were 12,400 males and 12,900 females. The population of the city was spread out with 32.5% 19 years of age or younger, 16.6% between 20 and 29, 18.9% between 30 and 44, 18.8% from 45 to 59, 3.0% from 60 to 64, and 10.2% 65 years of age or older. The population growth rate in 2001 was 2.8%.
Income
According to CBS, as of 2000, in the city there were 9,696 salaried workers and 810 are self-employed. The mean monthly wage in 2000 for a salaried worker in the city is ILS 6,954, a real change of 9.6% over the course of 2000. Salaried males have a mean monthly wage of ILS 9,034 (a real change of 8.4%) versus ILS 4,910 for females (a real change of 9.7%). The mean income for the self-employed is 7,687. There are 458 people who receive unemployment benefits and 960 people who receive an income guarantee.Ness Ziona is home to the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR), a top-secret defense chemical and biological research institute, with some 350 employees.
The Ness Ziona Municipality also includes the Kiryat Weizmann Science Park, which has been the breeding ground for many Israeli start-ups, such as Indigo, which was aquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2002, and manufactures high-end digital printing presses.
Education
According to CBS, there are 13 schools and 5,019 students in the city. They are spread out as 10 elementary schools and 2,821 elementary school students, and 4 high schools and 2,198 high school students. 62.9% of 12th grade students were entitled to a matriculation certificate in 2001.Twin cities
