Neurocam International

Encyclopedia : N : NE : NEU : Neurocam International

Neurocam is an international organization that was first widely known about after it advertised on billboards in Melbourne, Australia in January 2005. The advertisements gave no information as to what Neurocam was, merely repeating the group's slogan "get out of your mind" along with the organizations web address (www.neurocam.com[link]). The advertisements caused some mild intrigue amongst Australians, eliciting such varied reactions as:

People are invited by the group's web site to "join" Neurocam. Those contacting it to do so receive either "rejection" or "acceptance" letters via electronic mail, signed with such names as "Maxwell Knight", "Charles Hastings", and "Bridget Fischer". Other names such as "Neville Harris" and "Iocus Severus". Those that "join" Neurocam are given "missions" to perform.

The obscure nature of the "missions", the lack of information on the web site (which merely contains a long, and of course not independently verifiable, list proclaiming what Neurocam is not) have only fueled speculation. Some have speculated that this was indeed the intent.

Neurocam International explicitly states in every assignment that operatives are not to discuss and relate their Neurocam experiences until after the assignment due date. They are indifferent to public records of operative engagements with Neurocam but it does affect the security rating of assignments in receipt by the operative, according to Charles Hastings on Operative Wintermute's blog [link].

"Neurocam Oil Holdings" was the name of a fake company created by one "Robert Henley", in September 2003, in order to turn the tables on a Nigerian 419 scammer. A "Neurocam device" is also mentioned in passing on websites purporting to explain who "Robert Henley" is.

Since the billboard advertisement in Australia, thanks to the internet, Neurocam has become mildly popular worldwide, with people joining from all over the world.

Example assignments

Dear Operative

This e-mail contains the details of your next Neurocam assignment.

NEUROCAM ASSIGNMENT – NTC – 5555/01 – Operation “Bridget’s Mirror”.

(A) AIM

The employment of a diversionary tactic designed to protect the Chief
Executive Officer of Neurocam International.

(B) CONTEXT

Operatives within the Human Resources Security Division have determined
that one of Neurocam International’s competitors has been making enquiries
in an attempt to physically locate Ms. Bridget Fischer, Chief Executive
Officer of Neurocam International.

The motivation for these enquiries is currently unknown, but, in the
interest of assuring the personal safety of Ms. Fischer, the Human
Resources Security Division has determined that low impact
counter-measures should be deployed immediately.

(C) EXECUTION

Below are the procedural details for this assignment. Any deviation from
the operational protocol described may result in a requirement of
disciplinary action against the operative.

1. Locate a restaurant, art gallery, tourist destination, hotel, café or
similar location which possesses a “Guest” or “Comments” book.
2. Into the “Guest” or “Comments” book write a message which is somehow
relevant to Neurocam.
3. Sign your message with the name “Bridget Fischer”.
4. Repeat this process in 5 separate locations.
5. Submit a written report which details both the locations visited and
the message left to the Operations Division by close of business [insert
date two weeks ahead].
6. Although not compulsory, the submission of photographic evidence which
either a) includes both the venue and the “guest” or “comments book”;
and/or b) shows an unidentifiable business woman (preferably with shoulder
length brunette hair) at the same location; will result in the potential
“fast-tracking” of exemplary operatives.

(D) OPERATIONAL SECURITY

Neurocam International is aware that many operatives publicly discuss and
relate their Neurocam experiences via online forums and web journals.
Operatives are permitted to continue this practice, but are strictly
prohibited from discussing the details of this assignment. Any operative
found doing so will suffer immediate expulsion from Neurocam.

(E) TIMELINE

Neurocam International’s ongoing operational objectives and the urgency
generated by the unknown origins of our competitor’s motivations dictate
that the activities detailed in this assignment must be completed by
Friday May 13, 2005.

Regards,

Charles Hastings
