Neutral current

Encyclopedia : N : NE : NEU : Neutral current

A neutral current is one of the ways in which subatomic particles can interact by means of the weak nuclear force. It is mediated by the Z0 boson, and is called 'neutral' because the Z0 has no electric charge.

Neutral currents were discovered in 1973, and confirmed beyond doubt in 1974 in the Gargamelle bubble chamber at CERN. They were a significant step toward the unification of electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force into the electroweak force, and led to the discovery of the W and Z bosons.
