Claims to fame
John Glenn, a former United States Senator and the first American to orbit the Earth, was raised in New Concord and attended Muskingum College, a Presbyterian liberal arts college also located in the village. Incidentally, on May 1, 1860, a horse was struck by a meteorite near New Concord. (To stretch this theme a bit further, Muskingum graduate Agnes Moorehead played the role of an anonymous woman whose house is attacked by a miniature flying saucer in the 1961 Twilight Zone episode "The Invaders".)New Concord's more down-to-Earth claims to fame include the local John Glenn High School's annual canned food drive, which set national records for five years up to and including 2003.
New Concord is also the hometown of William Rainey Harper, founder and first president of the University of Chicago; it also claims as a native son the exceptional blues/rock guitarist Tom Nelson.
New Concord is also home to one of the rather unusual S-bridges found along sections of the old National Road.
