Encyclopedia : N : NE : NEW : New Worlds Imager
The New Worlds Imager is an NIAC funded project, headed by Dr. Webster Cash of the University of Colorado at Boulder. The project plans to build a large pinhole camera in orbit to image Earth sized extrasolar planets.
The aperture will be about 10m, and the focal length will be about 200,000km. It should be able to image Earth sized planets around stars as far away as 32 light years.
Dr. Cash was granted $400,000 US for initial research on this project by NIAC in October of 2005.
