New York State Routes
Current - Deleted

New York State Route 18 runs approximately parallel to the south shore of Lake Ontario between Niagara County and Monroe County, crossing also Orleans County. NYS Route 18 partially parallels New York State Route 104, another east-west route, but is farther north and closer to Lake Ontario. NYS Route 18 joins NYS Route 104 near Village of Lewiston at its western terminus in Niagara County. Unlike NYS Route 104, NYS Route 18 runs no farther east than Monroe County.

NYS 18 also parallels New York State Route 18F, which lies farther west. NYS 18F splits off in northern Niagara County and rejoins it in Lewiston.

As a north-south route in Niagara County, NYS Route 18 is called Creek Road. As this highway proceeds eastward along the lakeshore, it is called in places, East Lake or West Lake Road. After leaving Niagara County, Route 18 shifts farther south, moving away from the shore of Lake Ontario.

History

18 was once much longer than it is today. To the east, it once continued past Rochester to the northern terminus of NY 14 in Sodus; and at the other end it joined with US 62 and other roads to go down to the Pennsylvania border.

Route 18 is a road without much history, due the presence of the Hojack Line further south, which entered the actual villages, rather than passing to the north of them. Nonetheless, several hamlets developed. Many of these east of Lyndonville, however, have lost importance due to the construction of the Lake Ontario State Parkway.
