History
The route number 2 was originally assigned to the road from the Pennsylvania state line south of Corning to Rochester. In 1935, U.S. Route 15 was extended north into New York, taking over Route 2, and the existing Owego-Rochester NY-15 was renumbered NY-2.By 1939, the connection to Massachusetts Route 2 from Troy was assigned Route 96. Routes 2 and 96 were swapped by 1946, matching New York's and Massachusetts's Route 2s and giving Route 96 the Owego-Rochester route.
