Newark is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. The population was 470 at the 2000 census.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 96.3 km² (37.2 mi²). 95.3 km² (36.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (1.02%) is water.Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 470 people, 191 households, and 128 families residing in the town. The population density was 4.9/km² (12.8/mi²). There were 449 housing units at an average density of 4.7/km² (12.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.94% White, 0.21% African American, 0.64% Native American and 0.21% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.43% of the population.There were 191 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $33,611, and the median income for a family was $46,250. Males had a median income of $33,229 versus $22,045 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,035. About 9.8% of families and 17.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.8% of those under age 18 and 28.0% of those age 65 or over.
