Newport is a city in Orleans County, Vermont, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 5,005.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²). 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it (20.87%) is water.Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,005 people, 2,086 households, and 1,191 families residing in the city. The population density was 320.5/km² (830.0/mi²). There were 2,342 housing units at an average density of 150.0/km² (388.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.14% White, 0.76% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.22% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.28% of the population.There were 2,086 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% were non-families. 35.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.84.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,544, and the median income for a family was $34,922. Males had a median income of $33,810 versus $19,787 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,054. About 13.0% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.4% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of those age 65 or over.
Education
Newport City is the location of two public schools: an elementary school, Newport City Elementary, and a high school, North Country Union High School, both of the Orleans-Essex North Supervisory Union. It is also the home to two private schools: Sacred Heart Elementary and the United Christian Academy, both of which are affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.See also
