The Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture (Chinese: 阿坝藏族羌族自治州; Pinyin: Ābà Zàngzú Qiāngzú Zìzhìzhōu, Tibetan - རྔ་བ་བོད་རིགས་ཆ་བ༹ང་རིགས་རང་སྐྱོང་ཁུལ་ / Rnga-ba Bod-rigs dang Chavang-rigs rang skyong khul) is an autonomous prefecture in Sichuan whose capital is Barkam county. It has an area of 83,201 km².

Demographics

As of 2000 the Prefecture had 847.468 inhabitants. The population is 52.3% Tibetan, 26.6% Han, 17.7% Qiang, 3.2% Hui.

Language

Ngawa's linguistic situation is complex, there are mainly three languages: Tibetan, Jiarong and Qiang.

History

In 1956 the Ngawa Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture was established, in 1987 it became the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture.

The region is composed of 13 counties:

Pandas can be found in Wolong (卧龙). Places of interest include Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou Valley.
