Nhava Sheva is the largest port in India, handling close to 20% of the country's port traffic. The main goods exported are diamonds, gold jewellery, sporting goods, cotton textiles and iron ore. The main imports are electronics, heavy machinery, crude oil and natural gas. It has access to neighbouring Mumbai and to the hinterland of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka,and most of Northern India. The port was sanctioned to relieve pressure of the port of JNPT in Bombay proper. NSICT is India’s first privately managed container terminal. It is run by P&O Ports a subsidiary of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, UK. Currently it is managed under a Build-Operate-Transfer agreement set up with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) of the Government of India.
