Nicanor Perlas

Nicanor Perlas (*1950) is a sociologist and an environmental activist from the Philippines. Because of his work against nuclear weapons we was forced to leave the Philippines in 1978, but he returned after the end of the regime of Ferdinand Marco. He founded the Center for Development Alternatives (CADI), that promotes environment-friendly farming and a sustainable development.

Perlas became one of the most important environmental activists of the Philippines and a main body in the fight against an unchecked globalisation. He established the Life Bank system, which shall secure the survival of peasants. Perlas promotes the thought of globalisation as a spiritual task.

Nicanor Perlas is a member of the Club of Budapest and consultant for sustainable development at the UN. For his committed work, he was awarded The Outstanding Filipino Award (TOFIL) in 1994, the Global 500 forum price from the UNEP (1994) and the Right Livelihood Award in 2003, which he shared with Walden Bello.
