Encyclopedia : N : NI : NIC : Nick Bollettieri

Nicholas James Bollettieri (b. July 31, 1931 in Pelham, New York) is an American tennis coach who credited with developing many world-class champions. Among them are Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Anna Kournikova and, recently, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic, and Nicole Vaidišová. He also acted briefly as Boris Becker's coach.

Bollettieri graduated in 1953 from Springhill College (Mobile, Alabama) with a degree in philosophy. After serving with the United States Army and having attained the rank of 1ST Lieutenant, he turned to teaching tennis in 1956 after dropping out of the University of Miami Law School. Bollettieri's first students included Sheryl Smith and Brian Gottfried. His first formal tennis camp was at the Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Moving to Longboat Key, Florida in 1977, Bollettieri served as an instructor for the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. Gradually building upon success, he opened the Bollettieri Academy in 1981. The Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy has a Bradenton, Florida mailing address and is located on a 190 acre (769,000 m²) campus in unincorporated Manatee County on the west coast of Florida, about fifty miles south of Tampa. The Academy was purchased by a corporation in 1987, but Bollettieri continued to manage and play a pivotal role in the development of the tennis academy and ancillary programs. He continues to teach and engage in public speaking engagements throughout the United States.

He wrote an autobiography My Aces, My Faults with Dick Schaap, and is instruction editor of Tennis Magazine.
