Nidoran♂
Encyclopedia : N : NI : NID : Nidoran♂
is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. Prior to the introduction of genders in the Pokémon video games, this Pokémon, its evolutions, and the Nidoran♀ evolutionary family were the only Pokémon whose gender players could be completely sure about. Male Nidoran have larger horns than the females. The name, Nidoran, probably comes from Nidorino, which this Pokémon evolves into. "Nido", in all cases, is likely derived from the Japanese word meaning 'two times' or 'two degrees', because of the differences in the genders of the species, it is also likely derived from the pronunciation of "needle", since the Pokémon are all covered in many needle-like barbs or spines. Also, considering it is still young, "ran" probably derives from the fact that little animals often run away from danger.
Biology
Nidoran♂ is a poison pokémon whose biology in the games and anime have been based on the rabbit and skunk. Its sense of hearing is among the best developed of all Pokémon species, and spines can be unfolded from the skin that cause a light destructive poison. These spines can also be folded flat against the skin, to allow it to be handled or to move through underbrush. In the picture to the right, these spines are extended, causing tufts of fur to lift up. The size of its spines indicate toxicity.Nidoran♂ will raise its big ears to check surroundings, and will move them in many directions to detect danger. Nidoran♂ can do this because it has developed powerful muscles for moving the ears accurately. If it does sense danger, it will attack by stabbing with the horn to inject poison.
In the video games and anime
Nidoran♂ is available in every Pokémon game except Ruby and Sapphire, though it can be traded to those two games from FireRed and LeafGreen. It is more common in the Red Version than the Blue. It is most common in Pokémon Yellow. Nidoran evolves to Nidorino at level 16. If a moonstone is used on Nidorino, it will evolve into Nidoking.Nidoran♂ appears in an episode alongside its female counterpart, where the two Pokémon fall in love, and Ash and Misty try and get their Trainers, two kids who have been rivals all their lives, together, too. In the episode, the two Nidorans were named Tony and Maria, the names of the leads from West Side Story.
In other media
Nidoran♂ has appeared in the Pokémon Trading Card Game in the Base set series.
