Nigâr Hanım

Nigâr Hanım (1856-1918) is a Turkish poet.
Life and Poetry
As daughter of Macar Osman Paşa, Nigâr was born in İstanbul. She was very well educated, firstly attending Kadıköy Fransız Mektebi later receiving lectures at home from private teachers. She was able to speak eight different languages and play piano at a very young age.In hear early poetry she followed the traditional divan style, however, later partly due to the influence of famous poets like Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem she started to leave the traditional style and moved on to a more different and new style of poetry. Her new style was very much influenced by the Western poetry of her time. Her poetry book Efsus was the first poetry book written in Western style of poetry by a woman author. An important point in her poetry is the fact that she was the first woman author, since the Mihrî Hatun to ever use feminine style in Turkish poetry. Her writing style, use and choice of vocabulary and the motives used were very feminine and it is possible to say that she never tried to avoid her feminine side to show up in her poetry. Apart from poetry, she wrote proses and made several translations.
In addition to her importance in the post-Tanzimat Turkish poetry, she was an important and well-known figure in the society of her time. Apart from her career as a poet, her life-style, outgoing personality and choice of clothing had influenced the society and the perspective on woman of the time. Although it is not possible to say that she was a feminist, her view of woman rights was much ahead of her time.
In the last years of her life she had very lonely days which caused her great pain. She died in İstanbul, 1918.
