Nihoa Carnation

The Nihoa Carnation (Schiedea verticillata) is an endangered species of carnation endemic to the island of Nihoa in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Discovered in 1923 (the year of the Tanager Expedition), the carnation is 8- 12 inches tall. Only 350+ individual plants survive in two of Nihoa's rocky valleys.
