Nijunisha

The Nijūnisha (二十二社) or "twenty-two shrines" of Japan are 22 Shinto jinja (shrines) considered to be of the highest importance. The system was established during the Heian period. Most of the 22 shrines were selected from among those in the region around the capital, Kyoto.

The shrines listed below were designated the "Twenty-Two Shrines" in 1081:

Upper shrines

Middle shrines

Lower shrines
