Nirim
Encyclopedia : N : NI : NIR : Nirim
Nirim (נירים) is a kibbutz in the northwest Negev, near Israel's border with the Gaza Strip. It is named after the "Nir" brigade of the HaShomer HaTzair youth movement, some of whose members helped establish the kibbutz in 1946 at its original site, Dangour. During the War of Independence the kibbutz was attacked by Egyptian forces. Most buildings were destroyed and several members killed or wounded, but the kibbutz withstood the attack and thus helped determine the boundaries of the new state of Israel. After the war the kibbutz moved some 12 kilometers to the north-east to its present location, next to the site of an ancient synagogue at Horvot Maon.
Nirim has an area of 22,000 dunams (22 km²) and a population of about 620.
